The city of Ilam is located in the northwest of Ilam Province, surrounded by mountains and forested slopes of the Manasht, Sivan, Shalam, and Siah Kooh mountains, and the surrounding plains have a mild, mountainous climate and pleasant spring weather.
Ilam city has two parts “Central” and “Chvar”, two cities and four villages.
Qalaqiran Mountain, located three kilometers from Ilam, is considered the symbol of the city. Currently, Ilam is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the province due to its forest resorts and numerous historical and ancient monuments.
This city is not located in the geographical center of the province, so its location somewhat limits its communication and commercial importance, so that the products of distant districts and villages are exported to other provinces. However, the creation of a road network, connecting urban centers to Ilam, proximity to the border, relatively suitable and favorable climate, political-administrative centrality, and the presence of welfare facilities have given this city a special position.
Due to its climatic conditions, dense mountains, and vast plains, livestock and agricultural activities are very prosperous there.
Ilam is one of the border regions of the country, and today, the establishment of petrochemical and gas industries around it, as well as the establishment of electrical, mechanical, computer, civil, architectural, etc. engineering disciplines at Ilam University, has increased the province’s ability to carry out research and industrial projects.
The common language of the people of Ilam is Kurdish. Different tribes and clans also speak this language in all the cities of the province with slight differences in pronunciation and pronunciation of words. Most of the inhabitants of Ilam are Muslims and follow the Twelver Shiite religion.
